Trade holds delay the delivery of traded items to protect against account theft. The most common is the up-to-7-day hold applied when you have not had Steam Mobile Authenticator enabled for long enough, or when trading with someone new.
Running the Mobile Authenticator continuously is the key to avoiding most holds — it enables near-instant trades and removes the new-device delay.

Since July 2025, every CS2 item you receive in a trade is Trade Protected for 7 days. A protected item sits in your inventory and can be equipped and used in game, but it cannot be traded on or sold on the Steam Community Market until the protection lifts. Steam shows the date it lifts on the item.
The protection exists so that a trade can be undone. For those 7 days the trade can be reversed from Steam's trade history, and a reversal returns the items on both sides to their previous owners. That is what makes the classic scams — a hijacked account emptied into an alt, a fake "verification" trade — recoverable if you act inside the window.
- Scammed or hacked? Reverse the trade from your trade history before the 7 days run out, then secure the account (new password, new Steam Guard, revoke any Web API key).
- Buying through a trade? Expect the item to be locked for 7 days after it arrives, and remember the seller's side of the trade is reversible for the same period — which is why many marketplaces now wait for the protection to end before paying the seller.
- Checking an inventory? Steam withholds trade-protected items from a public inventory view: they are neither shown as locked nor as tradable, they are simply absent.
