Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about CS2 float values, wear tiers, and how they affect skin appearance and pricing.

What is a float value in CS2?

A float value (also called "wear value" or "float") is a decimal number between 0.00 and 1.00 that determines the visual condition of a CS2 skin. Lower float values mean less wear and a cleaner appearance, while higher values mean more scratches, scuffs, and paint loss. Each skin has a minimum and maximum possible float defined by its item definition, which is why some skins cannot exist in Factory New or Battle-Scarred condition. The float value is permanently set when a skin is created (from a case, trade-up, or drop) and cannot be changed afterward.

What are the CS2 wear tiers and their float ranges?

CS2 has five wear tiers based on float value ranges: Factory New (FN) ranges from 0.00 to 0.07, Minimal Wear (MW) from 0.07 to 0.15, Field-Tested (FT) from 0.15 to 0.38, Well-Worn (WW) from 0.38 to 0.45, and Battle-Scarred (BS) from 0.45 to 1.00. The wear tier is displayed in the skin name and significantly affects its market value. For example, a Factory New skin is almost always worth more than the same skin in Field-Tested condition, sometimes by a factor of 10x or more.

How does float value affect a skin's appearance?

Float value controls the amount of visible wear on a skin's texture. At very low floats (close to 0.00), skins appear nearly pristine with clean, sharp artwork and minimal scratching. As the float increases, you will see progressively more scratches, scuff marks, faded paint, and exposed metal or base material showing through. However, the specific wear pattern is determined by the paint seed, not the float value — the float only controls the intensity of wear. Two skins with the same float but different paint seeds can look quite different because the scratches appear in different locations.

What is a paint seed in CS2?

A paint seed (also called "pattern seed" or just "seed") is a number from 0 to 999 that determines where the skin's texture is positioned on the weapon model and where scratches and wear marks appear. Different paint seeds produce different visual results — this is why two AK-47 Case Hardened skins with the same float value can have completely different amounts of blue. Famous seeds like 661 (the "Blue Gem" AK-47 Case Hardened) are highly sought after and can be worth many times more than a standard pattern of the same skin.

What is a paint index?

The paint index is an internal identifier that maps to a specific skin finish. Each unique skin design (e.g., "Asiimov," "Dragon Lore," "Fade") has its own paint index number. While the paint index is less commonly used by traders than float values or paint seeds, it can be useful for verifying exactly which skin finish you are looking at, especially when using trading APIs or databases. The paint index is fixed for each skin definition and does not vary between individual items of the same skin.

How do I find the inspect link for a CS2 skin?

You can find inspect links in several places. In your CS2 inventory, right-click any skin and select "Copy Inspect Link." On the Steam Community Market, hover over a listing and click the small magnifying glass icon, then right-click the "Inspect in Game" link and copy it. On third-party marketplaces like Buff163 or Skinport, inspect links are usually displayed alongside item listings. The link will start with "steam://rungame/730/" followed by encoded parameters that identify the specific item.

Why do Factory New skins vary in price even within the same float range?

Even though all Factory New skins fall within the 0.00-0.07 float range, there can be significant price differences based on the exact float value. A skin with a float of 0.001 (often called "triple zero" or "low float") looks visibly cleaner than one at 0.069, even though both are technically Factory New. Collectors and traders pay large premiums for extremely low float values because they are rarer and more visually appealing. Some skins with floats below 0.001 can sell for many multiples of the standard Factory New price.

Can float values be changed or manipulated?

No. Once a CS2 skin is created, its float value is permanently fixed and cannot be altered by any means. There is no way to "improve" a skin's condition through polishing, cleaning, or any in-game action. The only way a skin's float value changes is through trade-up contracts, where 10 input skins are consumed to produce 1 new skin with a calculated float based on the inputs. The original skins are destroyed in the process. Be wary of any service or person claiming they can change a skin's float — this is a common scam.

What is a "capped" float and why does it matter?

A "capped" float refers to a skin whose minimum or maximum float is restricted by its item definition. For example, the AWP Asiimov has a minimum float of 0.18, meaning it can never exist in Factory New or Minimal Wear condition — Field-Tested is its best possible exterior. Similarly, some skins have maximum floats below 1.00, limiting how battle-scarred they can look. Understanding float caps is essential for trading because a Field-Tested Asiimov with a float of 0.18 (the absolute minimum) is significantly more valuable than one at 0.37, despite both being Field-Tested.

How accurate is this float checker?

Our float checker retrieves data directly from Steam's item servers using the inspect link you provide. The float value displayed is the exact same value stored in Steam's database — there is no rounding or approximation. We display the full 14-digit decimal precision. The paint seed and paint index are also extracted directly from Steam's item data. Results are instantaneous and always reflect the current state of the item. Note that this tool shows the float for a specific individual item, not the float range of a skin definition.
